Bengaluru, January 20, 2026:
Karnataka DGP Ramachandra Rao suspension: On Monday, the Karnataka government suspended K. Ramachandra Rao, a senior IPS officer and Director General of Police (Civil Rights Enforcement), after a controversial video that allegedly shows him in a compromising situation in his office during duty hours went viral on social media. The suspension was ordered just a few hours after the video went viral, which caused a lot of anger and political responses. The state government said in its official order that the officer’s actions were “obscene in nature, unbecoming of a government servant, and have caused embarrassment to the government.”
Violation of Conduct Rules Cited
The suspension order says that the government found that Rao’s actions broke Rule 3 of the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968, which says that public servants must be honest, disciplined, and behave in a way that is appropriate for their job.
The order said that the state is prima facie satisfied that Rao should be suspended right away while a full investigation is done. According to the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969, Rao will be able to get a subsistence allowance while he is on leave. He has also been told that he can’t leave the headquarters without getting written permission from the state government first.
CM Siddaramaiah Orders Strict Action
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that disciplinary action would be taken without exception in response to the event. “The law is the same for everyone, no matter how important or powerful they are. The chief minister told reporters, “There will be a full investigation, and then the right action will be taken.”
An official investigation into the event has been ordered, Home Minister G. Parameshwara said. He said that the results of the investigation could lead to further action, such as firing the person from their job.”The issue is serious. “An investigation is going on, and decisions will be made based only on the rules of the service and the evidence,” Parameshwara said.
The senior IPS officer has denied all of the accusations, saying that the viral video is fake. Rao went to Sadashivanagar to meet with the home minister and asked for a formal investigation into what he called a “false and malicious campaign.” “I’m shocked. These videos are fake. Rao told reporters, “I will take legal action against those who spread false information and hurt my reputation.”
The video, which is said to be about 47 seconds long and doesn’t have a date, seems to be a collection of different clips shot inside what looks like an office. Rao, on the other hand, said he was sent to Belagavi almost eight years ago and didn’t explain how the video could be connected to his current job, which made the Home Department very uncomfortable.
Rao, an IPS officer from the 1993 batch, has been in trouble before. In 2025, he got into trouble when the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence arrested his stepdaughter, actress Ranya Rao, for smuggling gold. During that investigation, Rao had to take a leave of absence, but he was later cleared of wrongdoing and given his job back.
